Also, Ron KR4GS will have a limited number of copies of the IEEE document titled "NASA at 50" available.

Dear Craig:

It gives me great pleasure to advise you that the ARRL Executive Committee has approved your club’s application for affiliation with the ARRL.  Your club is hereby declared a duly affiliated society with an affiliation date of September 10, 2008.

A charter has been generated and sent to you to honor this important event.  We hope you will coordinate a “Charter Party,” and invite your Division Director, Section Manager (SM), or Affiliated Club Coordinator (ACC) for a special presentation.  Addresses of Directors and SMs are on pages 15 and 16 of QST .

We ask that you keep these officials and us posted on your club’s activities.  Please send copies of any club news to your SM, ACC, Director and us.  Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns; we are all vitally interested in your progress.

Your club is now eligible for the benefits of ARRL affiliation; we hope you will make full use of our services.  One of those services is our online booklet full of helpful information for clubs – the Active Club Online Primer at http://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/club/cpw/.  Want to get your club more involved in public service?  Want to present programs that make meetings lively?  This online book permits quick access to hundreds of pages that can enhance the club and help it gain new members.

Again, congratulations and welcome.  We look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with your club.

73,

 D.E.A.R.S.
By WA2PCY

A new acronym, that we all will become more familiar with as time goes on. Standing for “ Disaster & Emergency Amateur Radio Service,  It is a group name that S.C.A.R.S. has developed for our very own Sun City Emergency Team. Sun City needs to be able to stand alone for a specified period of time should a disaster happen in our community. As Radio Amateurs we are all familiar with response to these things as during many weather and other types of emergencies we have all seen how our community of HAMS have responded. We have the unique ability of communicating when commercial entities and the authorities cannot and we must be ready to respond should the need ever arise.

Sun City is presently in committee with regard to an Emergency Plan and our very own Club President has now become a member of that committee. Hopefully we will be able to lead them with regard to response (at least from a communication point of view) in the event of a happening. As a D.E.A.R.S. member, you will all be issued a photo ID card which will eventually become known to our civil authorities as well as our Sun City personnel that will allow them to recognize that we are “Trained Radio Amateurs” who are part of the S.C.A.R.S. team and are responding to  whatever the local emergency happens to be. We are in the process of coordinating with the C.A, to set up a EOC right here in Sun City and have a proposal on the table for the necessary equipment. Be sure to attend our next club meeting for a complete update. Cards have already been created and are being distributed to our members who have submitted their pictures for our Web Site. Those who have no pictures on our site will not have cards issued. Those who do not have a picture on the site can email their picture to Ron Greene at ron@rgtexnet.com and a card will be issued and your picture will be put up on the site.

TEXAS HAMS NOW HAVE SIMPLIFIED LICENSE PLATE RENEWAL PROCESS

The Special Registration Branch of the Texas Department of Transportation has confirmed that Texas amateur radio license plates ("Radio Operator") will now have a combined registration and special plate renewal notice beginning with March 2008 renewals.

Licensed amateur radio operators will no longer have to send in the $1.00 special plate renewal annually and then process a separate registration renewal. This should also resolve the confusion of multiple vehicles bearing the same call sign which resulted in only registration for one vehicle being sent. Now, everything will be handled as a single renewal/registration for each vehicle.

The Special Registration Branch began sending the combined notices for March renewals with only two weeks prior to expiration. April and May renewals should have at least 3 weeks notice prior to expiration and by June the system should be on track with at least a month's notice prior to expiration.

Texas amateur radio operators who would like to obtain Radio Operator plates (the application fee is only $2.00 plus the vehicle registration) can find more information plus an application form at

Our Weather Radio Setup Program for the residents of Sun City has been a most successful program. We have set up in excess of 40 residents radios and are hearing from more each day. The program has been received very well by those who have taken advantage of it. Now they can leave their radios on knowing that it will only alert on Williamson County Weather and Amber Alert Emergencies. We will reserve a room if necessary for future set up sessions at the CA, but we have been most successful talking many of our residents through the procedure. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________

ATTENTION ALL MEMBERS WHO FILE AND RECEIVE APPROVAL FOR OUTSIDE ANTENNAS: PLEASE ADVISE OUR CLUB SECRETARY OF YOUR ACCEPTANCE.
