Horticulture

The Horticulture Club is an active group dedicated to organic gardening.  The club has a 5+ acre Community Garden located at 151 Sun City Blvd. near the Sun City property entrance on Hwy 195.  As you drive out Sun City Blvd., look for a windmill on your left.  This area has been leveled, fenced and will soon have up to one hundred and sixty 6 ft by 24 ft raised beds filled with organic soil.  These beds are used by club members for raising flowers and produce free of browsing animals.  Additional beds will be constructed by the members as the club grows.  All beds have water provided by a deep water well that is on the site.  An 8 ft by 12 ft glass-paneled greenhouse has been moved to the site and has been fitted with shelves for raising seedlings.  Additional greenhouses and other structures such as a training center are being planned for the site.

Club members include several Master Gardeners as well as many other members with myriad areas of expertise.  All share their expertise with other members of the club and the community.  There are many opportunities for club members to learn and participate in establishing new garden areas, including herb beds, fruit vines and nut and fruit trees, and programs such as the initiation of special interest groups and development of organic gardening training programs.  There will be seasonal sales of surplus vegetables, herbs and starter plants to Sun city residents.  Later, organic garden products such as compost and compost tea will be for sale.

If you are interested in the club and it's activities, you are cordially invited to visit us on Saturday mornings from 8 to 11:00 am at our garden site, or join us at our regular monthly meeting on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 1:00 pm in the Atrium of the Activities Center.  Please click on the following for more club information.
